The Secret of a Good Rest

2 minutes reading time

Good habits are the foundation of well-being!

There are numerous measures you can take to achieve a deeper and more restorative sleep, but none as effective as replacing your old or soft mattress with one that provides good support. In the bed market, many expensive technologies have emerged that claim to be beneficial without a strong scientific backing.

The golden rule

If you wake up feeling worse than when you went to sleep, then your mattress or pillow, or both, are not optimal for your body.

How to have good support?

Most people choose their pillow and mattress based on what they find most comfortable when lying down. This is a mistake. If you lie down and think “how good I feel,” you are most likely not getting enough support for your body to maintain good alignment.

As you sleep an average of 6-8 hours per night, a soft mattress can cause the skeleton to twist and distort even more in unfavorable positions, aggravating and worsening your overall state.

Choosing to prioritize good support over great comfort is not a sacrifice, you will still enjoy lying in bed, probably even more than before. Support feels different, not worse.

You don’t think “this is amazing,” but rather you are there lying without feeling anything at all. With adequate support, your joints and muscles can fully relax, which means that your mind can also disconnect and you will fall asleep much faster and more deeply.

Choosing the right mattress

-> In general, the firmer the mattress, the better.

->If you can easily slip your hand into the mattress, it’s probably too soft.

You will need to search and find what suits you best, but here are our top suggestions:

  • A very firm pocket spring mattress

a cheaper and short-term option: this type of mattress is replaced every 5 to 7 years depending on the quality.

Typically it should have 1400 -2000 springs or more.

An example of a firm pocket spring mattress: tapizados hernandez

It would be best to test the mattress first or choose a company that offers a free trial period.

Note: Some pocket spring mattresses also have large and deep “pockets” on the surface, which are not ideal and are best avoided.

  • A latex mattress topper, very comfortable!

In addition to providing excellent support, latex has several additional advantages: it is antibacterial, ecological, can last up to twenty years and is highly breathable which means it does not retain heat.

You must have a firm flat surface to put it on: You can put the mattress topper directly on the floor or on an MDF board on the bed. You can cut an MDF board to size to place on top of your bed base.

Other latex topper options: Una mattressEnsuenos.

  • The futon, Japanese quality

Japanese futons provide firm and even support that gives adequate support to the spine, reducing back pain. Unlike conventional mattresses, which can sag over time, a futon maintains its shape and offers a stable surface. Its firmness also improves blood circulation by preventing pressure points. Additionally, they are lightweight, easy to store, and made of natural materials, promoting a healthy sleeping environment.

Some models I recommend: Haiku futon , futon station

  • An orthopedic mattress, an economical option

They can be a good option depending on the model. In any case, they are replaced every 4-5 years because they usually deform quickly.

The worst type of mattress to avoid

The main type of mattress to avoid is the soft and poorly supportive one, that is, memory foam mattresses.

Memory foam, in particular, is not good, despite how well it is marketed. Memory foam allows the body to sink into it without adequate support pushing it up. The result is that your body will be forced to adopt a contorted and twisted position that will not only make it tense and uncomfortable, but also worsen its underlying mechanical condition over time.

When you get used to sleeping on a firm, supportive mattress and go to a hotel with a memory foam or soft mattress, you realize how important it is.

What to do if you think your mattress is not good?

The most important thing you can do, especially if you are undergoing ABC corrective treatment, is to start planning to change it, the sooner the better.

Some memory foam mattresses only have memory foam as a top layer, which means you can turn your mattress over and have a firmer, more supportive underside that will help you in the short term until you find a better solution.

You can also sleep on the floor. Use a yoga mat or two, get the latex topper mentioned above or simply put a couple of layers of duvet underneath you. It will do much better for you and you can start making plans to save for one of the better options above.

If your mattress is sagging in any way, get rid of it! Mattresses are not made to last forever. Latex ones last the longest, but start to wear out between 20 and 30 years. While a typical pocket spring mattress begins to wear out at 4-5 years.
